Status quo of the funding program

The challenges of worldwide climate protection can only be overcome by achieving a sustainable energy supply. Biomass is a very versatile renewable energy source, but its availability is limited. At the same time, biomass has a particularly large potential for more efficient use. For this reason, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety ("Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz und Reaktorsicherheit" - BMU) has set up the program "Promoting projects to optimise biomass energy use" as part of the national climate protection initiative. Since 2009, a broad portfolio of forward-looking concepts, technologies, plant and process optimisations have been developed for climate-efficient and sustainable use of biomass as an energy source for the generation of electricity, heat and biofuels. Use of various bioenergy technologies has reached a high scientific and engineering level, however, these solutions still require specific support for their transition to the market launch and market penetration phase. Therefore, in 2011, the funding program was reorientated.

The current funding announcement of 17/08/2011 focuses in particular on research and development projects for practical further development of competitive technology, flexible system plant concepts and products for sustainable and efficient generation of electricity and heat from biomass and biomass residues and waste materials.
