Getting out of the smoking area: Early warning system for boilers reduces particulate matter

VREM early warning system to enable operators to handle their biomass boilers more efficiently and environmentally friendly

Stuttgart - Together with HDG Bavaria and LAMTEC, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics (IBP) have developed a combination system for the early detection of operating errors by the operators of boiler systems. The improvement of combustion with continuous process monitoring not only significantly reduces harmful emissions, but also increases efficiency in practical operation to over 93 percent.

The debate about particulate matter from small combustion plants is as hot as the matter itself is. On the one hand, the approx. 11 million wood fireplaces and 0.7 million boilers in Germany generate a high proportion of renewable heat and contribute to climate protection, on the other hand, the figures of the Federal Environment Agency are sounding the alarm. Because wood combustion plants cause a comparatively high emission of fine dust and other pollutants, such as organic compounds from incomplete combustion. Some of these substances, especially polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are carcinogenic. In view of the trend towards the comfortable "comfort fireplace" in one's own four walls and the expansion of renewables through heat generation from biomass, solutions for clean firing systems are urgently needed. Now the research project "combination system" (FKZ No.: 03KB109) gives hope for smoke-free times. The project is funded in the BMWi funding area "Biomass Energy Use" within the framework of the 7th Energy Research Programme.
