Topic

Using the example of a brick factory, the project analyzes how process heat (500 - 1000°C) and material residues from biomass plants can be used for industrial brick production. The economic use of biomass in energy-intensive industries is thus demonstrated in an exemplary manner. In the project setup, a wood gasifier provides the heat and the carbonaceous residues from the gasifier are used as proe forming agent material in the brick. This cascade system reduces disposal costs, improves the product properties of the brick, conserves fossil fuels, and at the same time increases the cost efficiency of the process.
The project consortium consists of plant manufacturers (Burkhardt GmbH) and users (Ziegelwerk Ernst GmbH & Co. KG). Fraunhofer UMSICHT is project coordinator

Aims

The aim of the project is to promote the use of biomass in industry, particularly in the area of process heat supply, which will displace fossil fuels, reduce dependence on imports, and reduce CO2 emissions. The reference system is the production of bricks process. The project demonstrates the feasibility of innovative approaches such as the material use of gasifier coke in a product and the further development of firing technology through practical investigations.
