Topic

The project "BioEnergieDat" aims to provide an updated and comprehensive data base for the energetic use of biomass. It will contain information on the state of the art, the ecological effects and economic characteristics of production, supply and conversion processes of bioenergy. The data base serves for a modular accounting of process chains and can be accessed via a publicly available open-source software developed within the project.

Aims

BioEnergieDat is to support the development of a sustainable biomass strategy of the federal government and to contribute to the understanding of the complexity of the divergent opportunities to use biomass use as an energy carrier, as a material, or as food. The project is aimed at:

  • Supplying a valid, consistent database based on existing data sets on technologies for the use of biomass for energy production
  • Extending the existing database in particular with respect to technologies under development
  • Developing representative data sets for technologies and biomass-based energy carriers under German boundary conditions
  • Supplying a web-based IT infrastructure for a flexible, modular use and update of the database

Measures

KIT

  • Structuring and generation of validated and harmonized data sets for selected process chains of the use of biomass-based residue and waste materials for energy production as well as for parts of the selected process chains
  • Evaluation of existing scenarios with respect to future quantities for the further development of technologies
  • Development of a project-overlapping methodology for balancing process chains and development of procedures to assure data quality
  • Coordination of the joint project

DLR

The extrapolation of current data to future time horizons will be done in the project in terms of learning curves for cost and technical data. Therefore the assessment of future markets for various biomass technologies is important, as they influenc the speed of progress. DLR (German Aerospace Center) will evaluate existing scenario analysis together with the partners in the project to provide such information. At DLR the work package WP3 scenarios of the project will be coordinated.
