Topic

The project is emphasizing on a comprehensive assessment of greenhouse gas emissions by production of biogas from organic waste material.

Aims

The aim is the detailed analysis of greenhouse gas emissions by production of biogas from organic waste material. The results of the measurements will be evaluated by means of life cycle assessment (LCA) in order to compare different applied technologies. The room for improvement will be clearly represented in a catalog of measures to reduce the emissions. The project supports the reduction of greenhouse gases in biogas production and contributes to a climate-efficient technology in general.

Measures

In order to achieve the defined emission measurements at 10 representative installations will be carried out. As a basis for reviewing and updating existing LCA the relevant emissions data of all biogas plants will be collected. Based on the results, an emission-related comparison of this technology to other waste treatments, energy supply and fertilizer manufacturing processes will be carried out. The tests on practice biogas plants allow an optimization of the process in terms of reducing any identified emissions. In addition, digestate will be distributed on arable land and the resulted emissions will be analyzed.

Focus

  • Emission measurements at 10 representative biogas plants with organic waste material
  • Emission measurements after spreading of digestate (field measurement)
  • Life cycle assessment
  • Determination of emission factors
  • Reduction strategies
