Topic

The principle is to enhance the effectiveness of the hydrolysis process in already operational biogas plants by adding an external container to the existing configuration. This additional component improves decomposition of more resistant substrates, thereby reducing the volume of substrate required, increasing the amount of produced biogas and consequently reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Isolating the hydrolysis process in a separate container also influences the production of gases – allowing production of biogas with a higher proportion of methane. The fitting of these compact and versatile containers to existing or new-build biogas plants can be easily achieved.

The volume of biogas produced can be directly influenced by controlling the feeding of hydrolysate from the container into the main biogas fermenter. This facilitates rapid response to the changing demands of the energy market. This project covers both fundamental research as well as practical application using a prototype. Then the optimized solution will be implemented under standard operational conditions.

Aims

The aim is to develop an external component for the hydrolysis step of the biogas process (Laboratory, functional model, pilot plant). In this way, the economy of existing biogas plants should be increased: increasing efficiency (expected 10 %) and the temporal influence of biogas production. Further it should be contributed to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and to increase social acceptance: Elimination or reduction of the hydrogen sulfide in the biogas of the main fermenter, binding the hydrogen sulfide of the hydrolysis gas and reduce the biomass demand.

Measures

The tasks are the integration of the research results into an economic viable concept. In particular this applies to:

  • Design and development of the plant-specific solution
  • Constructive implementation and building a functional model and its integration into testing fermenter
  • Revision of the concept through integration of laboratory and experimental testing results
  • Implementation of a pilot solution and demonstration of functionality
  • Market and economic assessment and planning of measures for market introduction

The primary topic of the project is the flexible production of biogas in response to changing demand followed by implementation under practical operating conditions. Specific topics are:

  • Cooperation for the concept, dimensions and design of a prototype of the hydrolysis process 
  • Experimental investigations with selected substrates of the efficiency of decomposition, the influence of the biogas composition and possibilities for demand-based supply of biogas.
