Topic

The main issue of the project is in developing and optimizing a new membrane process for upgrading biogas to methane, whereby the focus is on its potential contribution to climate change mitigation. The company, Ingenieurbüro Buse GmbH, has developed the process and was handling the technical optimization. Biogas upgrading is done by using membrane contactors. Decarbonated and demineralized water is used to remove carbon dioxide from biogas. This process is run with very low pressure and no use of further chemicals is necessary. Therefore, the new process is assumed to have a high climate protection potential.

Aims

  • Evaluation of the greenhouse gas emissions saving potential of this new process and its optimization with regard to climate protection
  • Evaluation of the cost effectiveness and operating efficiency regarding the combination with small biogas plants
  • Comparison to existing biogas upgrading processes to show the market potential of the new process and its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Measures

Ing-Buse

  • Review of the process for upgrading biogas directly from biogas fermenters to biomethane in natural gas quality (biomethane in this quality can be fed into the public gas grid)
  • Evaluation of the new process against ecological and economic criteria
  • Review of the process by measuring relevant values at a pilot plant in industrial size
  • Optimization of the process during the tests and study of its function in long term tests

IÖW

  • Analyzing of socially relevant issues such as environmental performance, in particular greenhouse gas emission saving potential, as well as the profitability and regional economic impacts of both this new and already existing biogas upgrading processes
  • Assessment of the transferability of the new process and the potential contribution of biogas upgrading to sustainable development in the energy system, especially with regard to climate change mitigation

Focus

Ing-Buse

  • Biogas upgrading
  • Technical research
  • Feasibility of the new process

IÖW

  • Environmental assessment of biogas upgrading
  • Profitability analysis
