The project includes firstly the identification, description and evaluation of technology options for improving the efficiency of existing biogas plants and secondly the development of concepts for their realization under consideration of the contribution to climate change and the economy. Furthermore the project REPOWERING will open ways to utilize organic waste in systems that currently focus on energy crops for fermentation.


The aim of the project is to evaluate the potentials for REPOWERING of existing biogas plants. To reach this aim the following technology options will be considered:

  • Improvement of plant engineering
  • Process optimization
  • Clustering of single biogas plants
  • The project includes the development of concepts for the utilization of REPOWERING potentials. In order to evaluate these concepts scenarios will be designed. For the identified measures the costs of system optimization and operation are calculated.


  • Identification of technical options for further development of biogas plants
  • Monitoring of the existing biogas plants
  • Development of scenarios for technology implementation and of model cases based on real plant data
  • Development of REPOWERING options


  • Repowering of biogas plants
  • Optimization of the fermentation process
  • Demand orientated biogas and electricity production
  • Biomethane production and injection in the natural gas grid
  • Utilization of biowaste
