Topic

The project addresses the fermentation of domestic cereal straw into biogas. It is based on the patent-pending process for the fermentation of rice straw. The core of the project is the construction and operation of a pilot plant using cereal straw as the primary substrate.
The project is carried out in close cooperation between the project partners Herbst Umwelttechnik GmbH and the Technische Universität Berlin (Department of Circular Economy and Recycling Technology).

Aims

The aim of "Stramento" ( lat. made from straw) is to achieve an integrated energy and nutrient use of lignocellulose-rich agricultural residues through an innovative biogas process and thus to sustainably reduce greenhouse gas and nutrient emissions as well as improve soil functions in addition to providing biogas and fermentation residue substrates.

Measures

HUT - Herbst Umwelttechnik GmbH

WP 1: Coordination and management of the Stramento project: Planning of interim reports, meetings, presentations, publications as well as networking with other research institutions.
WP 3: Laboratory experiments with the loop reactor and cereal straw, essential and efficiency-enhancing operating parameters are determined for later plant operation.
WP 4: Design and construction of pilot plant on site in Trebbin
WP 5: Commissioning and operation of pilot plan over a sufficiently long stable and representative period.
WP9: Development of plant concepts for the construction of new plants or the equipping of existing plants with the loop reactor.

TUB - Technische Universität Berlin

WP2: Investigation of biomass potentials for straw and other lignocellulose-rich waste; characterization of straw occurrences concerning chemical, physical, and biological parameters; analysis of the regional distribution of straw sources; project-internal database which is interoperable with existing information systems for biomass potentials.
WP 6: Evaluation of fertilizer and soil conditioner as well as possible qualities in terms of fertilizing effect and pollutant content; investigation of emissions from fermentation residue handling, and application.
WP7: Experimental quantification of process-specific greenhouse gas emissions; measurements of gases N2O and CH4 from diffuse sources.
WP8: Quantification of the climate protection potential of the Stramento-approach; development of a material flow, energy, and greenhouse gas balance.

Focus

HUT - Herbst Umwelttechnik GmbH

  • Process technology and business models

TUB - Technische Universität Berlin

  • Material flow-oriented regional and spatial assessments
  • Biomass potential analysis
