This project is focused on the development of an overall concept of a plant that uses straw as energy source to locally supply power and heat.
The project is aimed at combining fluidized bed combustion technology with the fuel straw in a power range of (thermal firing capacity) 1-10 MW and, in the process, developing a marketable plant concept superior to existing ones. Economically and ecologically sustainable thermochemical conversion of residual straw in heat and power will boost the efficiency of biomass utilization and thus develop straw’s potential to supply energy.
This joint project is intended to implement fluidized bed combustion technology in the power range of 1 - 10 MW to convert straw into heat. In the joint project, the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation Magdeburg is in charge of analyzing optimal conditions for the operation of a straw combustion plant and identifying process parameters. The findings will serve as the basis for the planning and detailed engineering of a fluidized bed combustor with cogeneration in the output range of 1-4 MW of heat. The engineering will be implemented in a power plant based on grassy biomass to be constructed in a subsequent pilot project.
