Topic

Increasing competition and enforced cascading will necessitate the substitution of wood fuels by biomass side products and biogenic residues which, however, are characterized by challenging fuel characteristics and elevated heterogeneity. To sustain profitable operation of small scale combined heat and power plants, such biomass fuels needs proper pre-treatment and fitting on-site quality testing procedures. .

Aim

The project aims at the development and testing of flexible, efficient and economic pre-treatment methods accompanied by simple but reliable on-site quality testing procedures. This will sustain the profitable operation of small scale biomass fuelled combined heat and power plants which will play a crucial part in the future energy system marked by a large share of fluctuating energy sources.

Measures

DBFZ

The DBFZ will address the following tasks:

  • Definition of the requirements (in particular with respect to elemental composition) of the fuels to ensure failure-free operation of the gasification plant (AP2)
  • Assessment of appropriate methods for on-site quality testing
  • Analysis of fuel samples concerning chemical composition (AP5)
  • Coordination of the project and knowledge transfer (AP1) as well as evaluation of the results (AP6).

TFZ
The TFZ is responsible for the acquisition, provisioning and pre-treatment of the fuels as well as the analysis of physical-mechanical and fuel specific parameters.

Spanner RE²
Verification of fuel quality improvements based on the employed methods as well as reduced operational problems will be realized by Spanner using three different gasification plants.

Focus

DBFZ

  • Coordination, test setup definition, analysis, evaluation, knowledge transfer

TFZ

  • Acquisition, provisioning and pre-treatment of the fuels, analysis, knowledge transfer

Spanner RE²

  • Gasification test using real plants
