Final report only available in german.
Biogas plants reduce significant the anthropogenic CO2-emissions by increasing their share of renewable energy sources in the heat and electricity markets. The CO2-reduction amounts by the 9.000 installed biogas plants in Germany is approx. 21 million tons per year. The majority of these agricultural biogas plants are older than five years and more than half of the existing biogas engines must be renewed in the next five years. Therefore, there is a need for innovative and financially feasible measures that improve the existing plants economically and ecologically and make them competitive.
The overall aim of this project is the development of a process for the separate generation of biohydrogen (which can be used as a combustion moderator) and methane-containing biogas to increase the efficiency of electricity and heat generation (CHP). This causes a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions during combustion by the optimized combustion of the biohydrogen-methane mixture. Another effect is increasing the substrate yield and gas quantity due to the better digestion of the biomass in the acid hydrolysis stage (optimized process parameters in the individual stages).
DBI
The main focus of DBI's research is the further development of the hydrogen managed hydrolysis based on the results of previous work. Starting from the laboratory scale (1 liter fermenter), the process is upscaled to the pilot plant scale (2 m³ fermenter) in the DBI laboratory.
EnviTec
EnviTec supports with their experience the development of the process "BioHy" at DBI. The newly developed method "BioHy" is continuously being tested for its practical suitability. The results are upscaled by EnviTec and economic efficiency is considered on a commercial scale.
DBI
