The overall project focuses on stronger use of biomass and biogenic residues. Despite the fact that biomass is climate-friendly the utilization of this fuel correlate with high emissions. This contrast is particularly pronounced in the use of biomass residues and waste materials such as agricultural fuels (for example straw) or residual wood (for example with high bark content). On the one hand, high CO2 savings can be realized, but on the other hand, high emissions of dust and nitrogen oxides occur.
To increase the use of biomass and biogenic residues, the availability of cost-effective technologies for dust and NOx reduction is an elementary condition.
The aim of this project is the demonstration of a combined filter for dust and NOx reduction for biomass furnaces in the range of 0.1 - 5 MW. The first step will be an upscale of a manufacturing process for SCR catalysts in the low-temperature range developed by Fraunhofer UMSICHT. Further aims are the development and testing of a combined filter unit in the technical area of Fraunhofer UMSICHT under real conditions. For this purpose, a demonstrator will be developed together with Herding GmbH Filtertechnik, which enables the simultaneous reduction of NOx and the separation of dust.
