Topic

The use of dry fermentation (garage style) together with a following composting stage has increased for a few years in the biowaste sector. The anaerobic and following aerobic treatment of biowaste needs a structure that allows percolation with liquids (anaerobic stage) or permeation with air (aerobic stage). An insufficient material structure can lead to a smaller biological degradation in both stages. Through this the composting of digestates can create considerable greenhouse gas emissions.

Within the scope of the research project FermKomp the degradation and an efficient adjustment of both process stages should be demonstrated by a specific adjustment of the material structure. The requirements of an appropriate material structure will be determined to adjust substrates mixtures, which will be investigated according to the efficiency of the anaerobic digestion and a low-emission composting stage.

Aim

The main targets of the project are the establishment of a practical method to characterize substrates and the determination of an optimal structure for the anaerobic and aerobic process. Furthermore the achieved increase of efficiency of the anaerobic process as well as the emission abatement of the composting stage has to be quantified and evaluated. Finally the overall results will be evaluated ecologically.

Measures

DBFZ

The DBFZ will perform investigations on the characterization of substrates and digestates in laboratory scale. For the characterization will be used following methods: water capacity, density measurements, percolation characteristics, porosity, (organic) dry solids and biogas potential

Furthermore the DBFZ will perform investigations on the characterization of substrate mixtures and digestates in pilot scale from the pilot plant from GICON in Cottbus.

The DBFZ will perform emission measurements to determine GHG emissions from composting heaps. It will be used a continuously ventilated wind tunnel. In the exhaust of the wind tunnel will be sampled gas for the analytics.
