Results

Final report of the project is only available in German.

Subject

The project focuses on the integration of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells with biomass gasification. This combination is tar-tolerant, electrically efficient and highly promising for decentralized cogeneration of heat and power. However, the fluctuating nature of the producer gas can severely contribute to the degradation of the fuel cell. Goal of the project is the identification of critical SOFC operation conditions by means of impedance spectroscopy. The diagnostic feature is implemented through the power inverter.

Aim

Goal of the project is the identification of critical SOFC operation conditions by means of impedance spectroscopy. The diagnostic feature is implemented through the power inverter.

Measures

Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg
Within the project the existing 1 kW SOFC stack at the Chair of Energy Process Engineering is adapted to the utilization with synthetic producer gas. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy will be integrated in the control system to encounter critical cell conditions.

NOVUM engineerING GmbH
The Dresden based company NOVUM Engineering GmbH designs a tailor-made power inverter for the EVT-stack. From the low-noise real-time impedance data of the inverter, critical stack conditions can be identified.

Focus

Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg

  • Test rig development
  • Development of methods for the identification of critical stack operation conditions
  • Implementation of control strategies to ensure safe operation of biomass driven SOFC systems
  • Real gas operation at a biomass gasifier

NOVUM engineerING GmbH

  • Design of a power inverter with integrated online impedance spectroscopy
  • Evaluation of marketability
  • Economic feasibility study
