Lincke M, Petasch U, Gaitzsch U, Tillmann A, Tietze M, Niebling F (2020): Chemoadsorption for Separation of Hydrogen Sulfide from Biogas with Iron Hydroxide and Sulfur Recovery. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1002/ceat.202000032
Due to the changing tasks of the energy carrier biogas that is currently providing base load for on-site power generation and / or the provision of control energy, the production of biomethane gains an ever greater significance in the natural gas network. In particular, the preparation process for H2S removal and CO2 separation must be improved economically and environmentally. Consequently, the method of sulfur removal is a key technology in the purification of biogas.
The project aims of SuRIOx is the procedural development and testing of novel desulfurization system, for which in the context of the completed joint project FKZ: 03KB041 the material development and the function was verified. Under the proposed project SuRIOx the main aim in the determination of process parameters and process development for the individual steps biogas desulfurisation, in situ reactivation and the ex-situ regeneration with sulfur recovery. Compared to the existing desulfurization (e. g. active carbon), the method used in SuRIOx comprises several economic and environmental advantages, such as the recovery of sulfur, low disposal costs and no air entry into the biogas. The expectation is, that after a long life cycle no longer operational adsorber foams be recycled, the recovered sulfur can be marketed as basic chemical. This leads to lower life cycle costs compared with other desulfurization processes.
The project SuRIOx is to achieve the ambitious goal of providing biomethane more efficient regarding energy and resources in comparison with the state of the art. An efficient biogas desulfurization is absolutely necessary for the further expansion of the field. Through the use of novel desulfurization both economically and ecologically incentives can be created in the natural gas network for a further increase in the proportion of biomethane. The following table lists the environmental and economic objectives of the joint project.
IFAM
The main focus of IFAM-DD will be in the field of material development and coating technology. There will be a transfer of the results from the laboratory scale to the small scale. Especially for the coating and the calcination procedure need to be developed transferable parameters. Furthermore at the IFAM-DD occurs the evaluation of the adsorbent material in terms of degradation and material analysis.
IKTS
The focal point of Fraunhofer IKTS is in the development and testing of the individual process steps in biogas desulfurization, in-situ reactivation and ex-situ regeneration with sulfur recovery. The process steps are tested in the laboratory and pilot plant scale.
Alantum
The foci of Alantum are in the areas of the upscaling the coating technology, the development of flow and surface optimized adsorber geometries as well as the production of the needed support foams within the project.
Emission
The focus of Emission Partner will be both to scale up and further develop the coating technology and calcination procedure and the provision of coated adsorbent foam for the tests at laboratory and pilot scale.
Lehmann
The focal point of Lehmann-UMT is in the reactor design, the development and construction of the experimental system for biogas desulfurization and in the testing of the experimental system on a large scale Biogas plant in a separate stream.
Gicon
The foci of GICON are to develop a pilot plant system and testing this in the pilot biogas plant at the site in Cottbus. The aims of this research are cyclic testing with real biogas, to demonstrate the long term stability, verification of process parameters and to assess the cost effectiveness.
