Topic

With the adoption of RED, the EU has introduced sustainability criteria for biofuels. Consequently, various voluntary sustainability certification schemes have become established in practice. The continuation of the guideline (RED II) provides an extension of the sustainability certification to the electricity and heat sector from a plant size of 2 MW capacity. As a result, a certification process for the generation of electricity and heat from biomass is to be established. The project ZertGas develops transferable solutions in Germany and supports the realization of a practicable certification process.

Goal

ZertGas can prepare the implementation of the certification in the industry, identify potential challenges, on the one hand for the implementation of the RED II standards in the field of certification systems and on the other hand for biogas and biomethane plant operators and have concrete options for action.

Measures

DBFZ
Throughout the project, the DBFZ will develop a methodology for the calculation of GHG emissions from biogas and biomethane plants, which is coherent with the RED II framework.

Fachverband Bigoas
The focus of FvB lies in the execution of test certifications in example plants and testing of practicality.

Focus

DBFZ
Exemplary execution of test calculations based on the developed methodology for GHG balancing at 10 practical plants. Development of recommendations for action and practical guidelines.

Fachverband Biogas
10 suitable installations will be selected for certification. For this purpose, a questionnaire is created to collect the system data required for the certification. With the help of the collected data, test calculations should be carried out. This identifies problem areas and optimization potential.
