A flexible demand driven electricity generation from biogas is heading towards compensation of other fluctuant renewable electricity sources. Therefore, a system is needed which allows balancing between biogas production and use. Like other biological processes biogas production cannot be switched off in times of low electricity demand. This leads to an overproduction in certain times so that the biogas needs to be stored in gas holders to prevent emissions or flaring. Available storage systems are not able to use their nominal volume to store biogas for a certain time. The measurement of the filling level is very inprecise and cannot be used to determine a specific amount of biogas and potential electric energy in subsequence. In case of plant site electricity generation this drawbacks shall be overcome by combining precise information on biogas production rates and actual usage of biogas for cogeneration and technical improvements of the filling level measurement.


This project aims at the technical improvement of gas holder systems and implementation of a model in order to ensure a more flexible operation at low emissions.



The project will start with a technical analysis of existing systems and modification of the filling level measurement of one gas holder at the research biogas plant of the DBFZ. Influencing parameters will be identified and used for a model which is able to predict the filling level and potential productivity of the biogas plant depending from actual gas production rates.


A survey of the control system of selected Awite customers will be made. According to this data in addition with the requirements which will be defined in this project, one or more real scale plants will be selected. The measurement of the gas volume and the control of the plant will be optimised according to the goals of the project and the results from the pilot plant of DBFZ.
