Topic

The overall project addresses the production of renewable fuels from industrial paper residues and the introduction of the thermochemically produced fuel precursors into a refinery for refinement into fuels. In addition to the thermochemical conversion of the residues and the refinement of the fuel precursors produced by means of hydrogenation, the project also examines the tax classification of the fuels produced. Another aspect of the investigations is the engine testing of the fuels. The project is flanked by theoretical studies on the scaling of the plant and the marketing of the fuels.

Aims

The aim is to demonstrate the production of renewable fuels from residues from the paper industry, to test the fuels and to evaluate the integration of the renewable fuel into the existing infrastructure of a refinery. In addition to the technical investigations, a holistic system-analytical, regulatory and economic consideration of the overall concept as well as the legal evaluation of the current legal framework for renewable fuels will be carried out.

Measures

Fraunhofer UMSICHT

  • TCR of the paper residues
  • Practical simulation of the refining processes in the pilot plant
  • Upscale of the TCR plant

Gunvor Rafinery Ingolstadt GmbH

  • Qualification of TCR oils for refining use
  • Support of the practical simulation of the refining processes in the technical centre

BMW AG

  • Comparison of the TCR-based fuels and fossil gasoline regarding pollutant emissions on a vehicle test bed.

Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg

  • Identification of all legal framework conditions relevant for the production and use of the fuel and recommendation for action

Leipa Georg Leinfelder GmbH

  • Provision of the feedstock
  • Support with the up-scaling of the TCR system for the Leipa site.

East Bavarian Technical College Amberg-Weiden

  • Engine tests of the TCR-based gasoline blends
